The sun is shining Monday morning, but Friday, snow and wind brought major damage to Mor-Gran-Sou Electrics lines. The co-op has crews in from across the country helping them get the power back on. Behind me, you see the main staging areas for those crews. Today, we went out to take a look at the work theyre doing to get those lines back up. Mor-Gran-Sous co-manager Don Franklund says the Good Friday storm let loose with 8-to-9 inches of snow and ice. (Don Franklund): I mean I grew up in North Dakota, and this is the first time I ever saw it snow snowballs. About egg-sized snowballs came down. And stuck on everything. 60-mile-per-hour winds sent power lines bouncing. (Don Franklund): And it just literally tore everything down that runs east and west. We had cases where the poles snapped and flew across roads. More than 400 miles of line down, estimates showing at least 8000 poles damaged. (Don Franklund): We have these linemen, 25, 30 years of experience, working construction. And they have never seen anything like this. Im assuming this is it. This is one of the worst ever. Franklund looked to the co-op family for help. In a couple days, more than 300 linemen are in from across the upper Midwest. (Don Franklund): Burke-Divide, Dakota Valley, Northern Plains. We have the Basin TSM crews here. We have Slope here, NoDak Electric, as well as Cass Electric. Most of the crews load up at the staging areas in Mandan and Dickinson.
